Very nice state park. The old fort is neat but needs some updating with the displays and such. Easy to get around and not to big to explore on your own. Great views over the water. There is a bike/walking path on the other side of moat. Worth the stop if you like American history. Otherwise there is a pretty stellar beach area. Seems very popular so would avoid during peak periods. Great for swimming and snorkeling if the weather is right. Picnic tables available nearby. Also noticed that areas can be reserved for private events.
Rating this poorly for sunset viewing only. I have no other experience here. I went to this place to watch the sunset as it is specifically marketed as a great place to check it out. As soon as the sun got below the horizon the park guys were driving by each individual telling them it was time to leave. As I was leaving the colors were getting to their prime orange and reds,as they typically do once the sun gets below the horizon, and I was unable to watch the best parts of the sunset. I passed by the southern most point shortly after and found everyone there had a much better view. I was extremely disappointed as it turned out to be a very colorful view. I'd recommend going to a pier or somewhere else but whatever you do don't bother spending $ here to catch the sunset.
It's a nice place to enjoy Atleast half a day. The entry fee is $6 per vehicle plus 50cents each passenger upto 8 passengers.but it's worthy, the sand is rough as it has lot of stones but if you can swim an go bit further it's good place for snorkel. The place has cafe which serves till 7pm and beach shop where you can rent chairs and snorkel equipments. Also it has washrooms so that you can change after swim.
Finding it was a little difficult because the public access roads were under construction. The park itself was beautiful, however there were some homeless people sleeping on picnic tables and also in some cars in the parking lot. There are bathrooms located throughout and they are clean and seemingly safe. They have a little outdoor concession stand with patio seating but it's a bit high priced; but you get to take pics by the famous mile marker pole so it's worth it. The beach and view are absolutely breathtaking!
Great beach. Best for snorkelling from beach I've seen in the keys, especially around rocks. Fun rocks to play on and around. The old fort was fun to explore as well. We weren't here for sunset but my guess is that it is beautiful. Lots of picnic tables for general use. Beach chairs and umbrellas available to rent.
