Now it's just a good place to lay in supplies if you don't feel up to the ride out to the 24-hour Winn-Dixie at the Overseas Market. Very little drama, although the last time I was there late at night some rowdy girls were yelling at each other pretty loud... :)
Back in the early eighties you were tempting fate to stop here late at night. I lived on a shrimp dock on Stock Island and bicycled into Old Town to work each day. I would ride home usually late at night after partying, and several times when stopping at the Oco-Pep for supplies I had to face down some pretty rowdy drunks, or the occasional bad-@55 who was waiting for the odd drunk to roll. Of course, the same was true of most of the ride, especially once you crossed the bridge and got within hailing distance of the notorious Boca Chica Bar there. But back then we all fancied ourselves pirates, so it was just part of the game. Ah, good times! :)
It's open 24 hours, they sell beer and other essentials, and they are one of only two stations on the island of Key West with diesel fuel (the other is the Dion's Quik-Mart on Flagler Boulevard). As stated by others their fuel prices are low for Key West, although sometimes the Dion's on Flagler may have marginally lower fuel prices. Trust me, I know, I worked for Dion's for about six years setting up their computer systems before leaving Key West in 1998.
Owens Oco-Pep was the brand name of a chain of gas stations, mainly in Illinois but with a few stations in Florida for some reason. One of them is this iconic old-school gas station, now called Freedom Oil - but they still have the old Oco-Pep sign up, and to me it will always be the Oco-Pep - or at least until they turn it into some chi-chi upscale C-store.
